Heroes of Legend is a game with roots in Arthurian tales. Merlin made the mistake of training the wrong person all because he was blinded by her charm and beauty. She eventually sealed him in a tomb and went on to destroy Camelot. Before he died, Merlin had a vision of a future world (our modern day), and saw that his lost love would be reborn there with all the power she had inherited from him, and she would take over the world with an army creatures and villains from myth and legend summoned through a powerful portal.

Merlin cast a spell that causes his spirit to return some time before the sorceress, but broadens it to include the souls of all the world's mightiest heroes/heroines of myth and legend to help him combat this menace. Weakened by the broadening of the spell to include them, Merlin is reborn without the memory of his magics and must relearn everything through studying what he could find, whereas his former love recovered her knowledge as she grew into adulthood. This imbalance of power means that Merlin, now Ambrose, must seek out those spirits he summoned and awaken them to their true selves. With them, he intends to combat the evil sorceress and her minions, and right the wrong he initiated.

The player characters are these heroes and heroines. Born into the modern world to normal parents around the world, they know nothing of their inherent powers or abilities. They do realize that there is something different about them, because they can run faster than their friends, or can lift heavy objects without straining as others do, and so on. Ambrose finds them and awakens them to their true abilities and tries to convince them that they should fight the evil sorceress' forces wherever they may be. He then moves on to seek out the others around the world, leaving the PCs to their fate.
